In Memory of Shadow

Time flies. It was June 2006 when Shadow escaped through the back door and never came back. Despite all the posters and the RM500 reward, he was never found.

Shadow is a very laid back cat. He loves lazing around the house. On the weekends when I sleep in, sometimes till 11:00am in the morning, Shadow will be also sleeping, beside me on my bed, till 11:00am.

He is big for his age. The picture below taken when he is just about 8 months old. Unlike other kittens, he is not interested in playing but he loves having people close by.

Shadow, the handsome Lion Cat.

Ginger, at that time still a baby, followed Shadow everywhere. She looked up at him and always stayed close to him. In fact, she is closer to Shadow than she is closer to me.

Baby Ginger, always making sure she is close to Shadow.

Lazing around on a Sunday afternoon.

Sleeping soundly in my room, using my bag as a pillow.

And of course, Ginger is always not far away.

As he is a big cat, he is not intimidated by Winter at all. In fact, he often tries to show Winter that HE is the boss. Winter, of course, with all her love for cats, normally let Shadow have his own way. I am sure Winter misses Shadow as much as I do, as the Spice Cats now are not interested to play with Winter at all.

I am the KING! And you are my servant!

BOW to me, loyal dog servant!

Good Servant. BOW LOWER!

Make sure my ears are clean!

Mmmmm.......Nice.....

I hope whoever got Shadow now is treating him well.

Winter, the Dog Hater!

Yesterday, I actually planned to try to bring Winter to the PetnYou Anniversary Bash at Subang Jaya. Sonia brought Hera and Spike over to my house earlier before the event to introduce the dogs. I know Winter is aggressive towards other dogs but I was hoping that she would be intimidated by Hera’s size (Hera is a magnificent Great Dane mixed and she is 3 times bigger than Winter).

Much to my despair, Winter was so aggressive towards Hera that she was ready to bite Hera’s head off! Thank God Hera is a very well behaved dog, else I am sure that Winter will be no match for Hera. We tried introducing the dogs slowly, in front of my parents house, beside the road. But it was no use. Winter was just too aggressive. There was once that Winter got too close to Hera and accidentally bit Sonia’s hand when she was going at Hera (Sorry Sonia!). Luckily it was not serious.

By the end of 20 minutes, Winter was slightly better. She could tolerate being a little closer with Hera without pulling at the leash trying to pounce at Hera. Winter could also tolerate Sonia walking around with Hera, but she keeps a watchful eye on them wherever they are. Winter did not even want the dog treats I gave her when she was keeping quiet. This is extremely rare. Winter NEVER say no to food.

I am partly to blame for Winter behaving this way. When she was just a puppy, probably about 4 months old, she escaped and got into a terrible fight with a group of strays. She came back covered with blood with a fractured ear and dog bites all over her body. We had to carry her to the vet. She could not walk for a couple of days and it took her weeks to completely recover. She probably is very defensive and angry towards other dogs ever since. We also did not try to socialize her with the other dogs when she was younger. And thus, her aggressive behavior and mistrust towards other dogs just became a part of her. She is friendly towards human and cats though.

Below are some pictures of Winter and my cats. If only she could accept other dogs like she accepted my cats.

Winter kissing Sesame (I did a screen-capture from a movie my mom made, and thus the wording on the picture.)

After kissing, there is licking.

After licking, then there is cuddling.

I have also snapped some photos of Hera and Spike. Thanks Sonia for trying to ‘cure’ Winter. I really do hope she can learn to trust other dogs.

Sonia, with Hera and Spike.

Hera came running when we played fetch in the school field.

Here she is, with the big stick.

Mmmm......Spike seems to attract quite a few admirers yesterday.

Yeay....doggie umbrella!

Hera, truly enjoying the car ride.

And also leaving her saliva all over the window.

Spike, just sit calmly with a serious look on his face.

Looking out the window cautiously and thinking....I am not sticking my head out there...

There were a lot of dogs at the event, not as much as the last event. I didn’t snap a lot of photos this time. Below are 2 cutie pies.

A real-life bear dog!

Such a cutie pie.

Huh? A poodle with blue ears?

My Loyal Protector

So far, ever since I moved to Blogspot, my blog has been dedicated to my cats. I want to dedicate this post to Winter, my loyal friend and protector.

Winter is a gem. She is a 5 years old mixed breed. Maybe even a Dalmatian mixed breed, from the look of her coat. A friend picked her up from the streets and gave it to me when she was just about 2-3 months old.

For those of you who had read my previous post, knows that she does not tolerate intruders well. She has killed a total of 4 civet cats (musang) and 5 rats so far. How she managed to capture the civet cats and rats are beyond me. From the bodies we found, there were no traces of blood, so we suspect she killed her victims with one fatal bite on the neck.

Though she is a brutal killer, she is amazingly gentle with my cats. Well, gentle in a way. She is still a too rough for my cats liking when she is trying to get them to play with her. On Merdeka day, Pepper showed some curiosity towards Winter when I opened the back glass door to hang my clothes. I stood there and observed them. Pepper went close to Winter, trying to smell Winter. Winter, as usual, was wagging her tail when she saw Pepper moving close. Then out of the blue, Pepper turned aggressive, hissed and clawed then moved away.

I did not notice anything at first. Pepper ran back to Sesame, and Winter just sat there, crying. I patted her head and she was still crying. So I bent down in front of Winter, asking her what is wrong. As I looked closely, I noticed that there is a small drop of blood forming at her nose, barely noticeable. Pepper managed to claw Winter’s nose! And Winter did not turned aggressive nor retaliate. She just sat there and cried to let me know she has been hurt. It was a very small scratch. When I rubbed her nose, she went back to wagging her tail and trying to lick my face. I examined her nose and face to make sure there are no hidden scratches. Both Pepper and Winter are vaccinated so I am not too worried. After I patted Winter, she was back to her normal self, running about when I went out to hang the clothes.

Winter is a very smart dog. She knows the difference between the cats, my pets, our family, and the intruders. You protect your family from intruders. And when a family member hurts you, you do not hold it against them, you do not seek for revenge, and you still love them all the same.

When Winter is still a baby, and below is her now.
